Why is Proper Medication Storage Important?
In 2013, a little more than 5% of Oregon teenagers aged 12-17 reported misusing prescription medications. There is a risk of young children accidentally ingesting medications if they find them, as well as visitors and family members of all ages finding and misusing them. Proper medication storage helps prevent these risks and reduce rates of overdose, misuse, abuse, and diversion.
How do I Properly Store Medications?
- Store as directed in the original containers the medications come in
- Lock medications, such as opioids and benzodiazapines, in a secure safe, cabinet, or drawer
- Monitor medications, and always know how much you should have at any given time. Check them regularly.
- Dispose of any medications not being used through the proper routes listed above
