Local Efforts for Prescribing

Opiate Oversight Committee

Effective since 2008, the Opiate Oversight Committee (OOC) reviews cases for Multnomah County Health Department primary care providers seeking support and guidance on treating complex, persistent pain patients with opioids. The OOC consists 1-2 primary care providers, a clinical pharmacist, a behavioral health specialist, and 2 Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) specialists. They meet every other month to review cases on a referral basis and provide recommendations for opioid and non-opioid treatment based on patients’ individual medical and biopsychosocial attributes in accordance with Multnomah County’s policy on prescribing opioids. Recently, the OOC has been able to look proactively at cases of concern, such as those receiving higher than 90 MED (Morphine Equivalent Doses), concurrent benzodiazepines, and aberrant UDS findings and provide recommendations to providers.
